Renowned hitmaker and teen favorite passes at the age of 82

The world has lost another musical legend. Lou Christie,

the chart-topping teen idol known for his soaring falsetto and iconic hit

“Lightnin’ Strikes,” passed away on June 17 at age 82.

From Church Choir to Pop Charts

Born Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco in Glenwillard,

Pennsylvania, Christie first discovered his voice in a church choir.

He recalled his debut performance at a first-grade

Christmas pageant, singing “Away in a Manger.”

That applause sparked a passion that never faded.

He later adopted the stage name

Lou Christie and began recording

in a modest two-track studio in his hometown—

no big-label backing, just raw talent and drive.

The Rise to Fame

Christie made his breakthrough in 1963 with

“The Gypsy Cried,” followed by

“Two Faces Have I.” But it was 1966’s

“Lightnin’ Strikes,” co-written with his longtime musical partner

Twyla Herbert, that shot him to stardom.

The song hit No. 1 on his 23rd birthday.
