What Happened When I Missed My Wife’s Birthday

My wife’s 37th birthday party was on the same day as my best friend’s wedding.

She refused to postpone, so I said, “Sorry.

He’ll get married once, while you’ll have a birthday every year.”

She just smiled. At the wedding,

I got a text from an unknown number.

To my horror, it said, “Your wife is dead.”

My heart sank. For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

I left the reception hall quietly, trying not to draw attention.

My hands were trembling as I called her phone over and over,

but it went straight to voicemail.

A flood of thoughts raced through my mind — regret for not being there,

confusion about the message, and fear of what I might find.

I rushed to our house, only to see cars parked outside and the lights still on.

Bursting through the door, I found… a room full of people yelling “Surprise!”

My wife stood at the center, laughing at my shocked expression.

It turned out that she and my sister had planned a surprise party and sent the mysterious message from a temporary number to make sure I’d come home early.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,

but one thing was certain: she had definitely made her birthday unforgettable.

Later, she admitted she wanted to teach me a light-hearted lesson about priorities.

It worked — not because of the scare,

but because I realized how much these moments together truly mattered.
