Today, as usual, we went to our local supermarket where we buy almost all of our family’s groceries. It’s a trusted store, everything always fresh, never had any complaints . This time we picked up a dozen eggs — nothing seemed wrong. At home I started making breakfast, cracked a couple of eggs, and then noticed something strange inside.

Small, slippery lumps, like bits of slime.  I almost gagged — my first thought was: could there be larvae or insects inside?  But then I decided to look it up online and was shocked.  Luckily I noticed it in time and we hadn’t eaten them yet . It was unpleasant even to look at, let alone eat. My husband suggested we go straight to the store to demand a refund, but I wanted to check first if anyone else had experienced this.

We went online, read reviews and advice. And here’s what we found out — these were calcium deposits, basically made of the same material as the eggshell.

Sometimes they form inside the egg because of the chicken’s diet or a problem in their body. They look scary, but are completely harmless as long as there’s no infection.

To be honest, that didn’t make me feel much better — I still didn’t want to eat it. But at least we understood that it wasn’t parasites or some deadly threat.

From now on, we’ll check the eggs more carefully before buying them and will probably switch brands. Even if it’s harmless, discoveries like this definitely kill your appetite.
