Why I Recently Invested $6,500 in a Registered Black Angus Bull

Earlier this year, I invested $6,500 in a registered Black Angus bull for my small cattle operation. I had high hopes for him, expecting he would help strengthen my herd and justify the cost over time. But within the first few weeks, he showed little interest in anything other than grazing peacefully in the pasture. While the rest of the cattle moved about their normal routine, he wandered quietly, calm and carefree. After watching him for days, I found myself wondering whether I had made the right investment. His temperament was gentle, which I appreciated, but he didn’t seem eager to take on the role I had purchased him for.

After some hesitation, I decided it was best to get a professional opinion. I called the local veterinarian and explained the situation. When he arrived, he gave the bull a full examination and assured me there was nothing wrong with his health. The bull was strong, alert, and well-developed—just perhaps a little younger and slower to mature than expected. With a reassuring smile, the vet handed me a small supply of supplements and instructed me to give them once a day. He explained that the vitamins and minerals would support the bull’s energy levels and overall development, giving him the boost he needed.

To my surprise, the change happened quickly. Within two days of starting the supplements, the bull became noticeably more active and engaged with the herd. His energy picked up, and he began moving confidently among the cattle, fulfilling the purpose for which he had been purchased. It was as though he had simply needed a little extra nutritional support—and once he had it, he was ready to settle into his role on the farm. I felt a wave of relief wash over me, glad that the investment had not been in vain.

The most unexpected moment, however, came shortly afterward. Feeling energized and enthusiastic, the bull became curious beyond the borders of his own pasture. One morning, I discovered he had pushed through a weak section of the fence and made his way onto my neighbor’s property, mingling with their herd as if it were an extension of his own. Thankfully, my neighbor found the situation more amusing than bothersome, and we shared a good laugh while repairing the fence together. As we talked, I couldn’t help but reflect on how quickly things had changed—from questioning the value of my investment to watching the bull become more productive than I ever imagined. It was a reminder that in farming, patience and proper care often turn uncertainty into success.
