Air Force Academy cadet, 19, discovered unresponsive in dormitory

Nineteen-year-old Avery Koonce was supposed to fly. Instead, she never woke up.

A healthy, driven Air Force Academy cadet, gone in days from a cough no one imagined could kill.

Doctors would later find a rare, vicious bacteria tearing through her lungs and blood.

Her family, her squadron, her dreams—everythin… Continues…

In the days before her death, Avery pushed through a worsening cough the way she approached everything: with determination and optimism.

No one around her could have guessed that Paeniclostridium sordellii,

a rare but aggressive bacteria, had taken hold in her lungs and bloodstream,

turning a respiratory infection into a catastrophic sepsis that her body could not survive.

By the time first responders reached her dorm room, it was already too late.

Those who knew Avery remember far more than the medical details.

A Thrall High School graduate, track and field competitor, and member of the Air Force Academy Class of 2028,

she poured herself into every goal, intent on becoming a pilot and studying biology.

Leaders called her remarkable; teammates called her relentless and kind.

In grief, her community now holds tight to the

unfinished promise of a life aimed unmistakably toward the sky.
