An Unexpected Conversation at the Food Court

I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is 92).

We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching

a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors:

green, red, orange, and blue. My dad kept staring at him.

The teenager would look and find him staring every time.

When the teenager had had enough, he sarcastically asked,

“What’s the matter, old man, never done anything wild in your life?”

Knowing my dad, I quickly swallowed my food so

that I would not choke on his response, knowing he would have a good one.

In classic style, he did not bat an eye in his response

:My father calmly smiled and said,

“Son, I once trusted a barber who promised just a trim.”

The teenager blinked, unsure where the story was going,

while I felt my shoulders relax in anticipation.

My dad leaned back, folded his hands, and let the silence do some of the work for him.

He went on to explain that experiments, mistakes,

and bold choices were not new inventions of youth,

just old memories wearing new colors.

He said every generation finds its own way to stand out, and every generation later learns how little those differences really matter.

The teenager’s expression softened, and a small laugh escaped him. They ended up talking about music, change, and how time has a way of humbling everyone equally. When we finally stood to leave, my dad winked at me, and I realized that wisdom does not need to raise its voice to be heard.
