They followed the blood in stunned silence, each step heavier than the last.
In the grey, humming stillness of the basement corridor, the familiar building became a place of dread.
At the end of the trail, behind a door meant only for forgotten boxes and unused junk,
they found what no one was prepared to see: a newborn, alone on the cold floor,
wrapped in almost nothing, its tiny body trembling, its face red from crying.
For a moment, no one moved. Then chaos broke: someone ran for blankets,
another called emergency services, hands reached out in shaking, clumsy tenderness.
Fear gave way to a fierce, protective urgency. The baby’s cries softened as warm arms finally held it. In that dim storage room, horror and hope collided—proof that even in the darkest corners, the instinct to save can still overpower the instinct to abandon.
