Born in 1937 on the South Side of Chicago, Marian Robinson devoted much of her life to family. In 2009, after Barack Obama entered the White House, she moved to The White House to help care for her granddaughters, Malia Obama and Sasha Obama, during an extraordinary period in their lives.

Although often referred to as “the first grandmother,” Robinson preferred to remain out of the spotlight.
