In the middle of the Queen’s Cup semi-final , 53-year-old Indian businessman Sunjay Kapur unexpectedly collapsed during a polo match, leaving his teammates and assistants stunned, including figures close to British royalty such as Prince William , with whom he shared a friendship and passion for the sport.
It all happened in seconds . Kapur, smiling and in full physical condition, was skillfully controlling his horse when an unexpected circumstance changed the course of the match. What seemed like just another day of sport ended in tragedy.
According to witnesses and British media, the businessman accidentally ingested a bee while galloping , causing an immediate allergic reaction that led to a collapse. Preliminary reports point to anaphylactic shock that led to a sudden heart attack. Although authorities are continuing the investigation, all indications are that the sting was on the tongue, which accelerated the lethal effect.
Kapur was much more than a polo figure. He chaired Sona Comstar , a multinational company specializing in electric vehicle components, with operations in India, the United States, China, Serbia, and Mexico . Under his leadership, the company established itself as a key supplier of parts to the global automotive industry.
He also served as the president of the Indian Component Manufacturers Association and co-chaired the Manufacturing Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry , where he was considered an influential voice for the country’s industrial policies.
His education included studies at The Doon School , nicknamed the “Indian Eton,” and a business degree from the University of Buckingham , credentials that supported his meteoric rise in the corporate world.
On a personal level, his life was closely followed by the Indian and British press. He had a troubled relationship with Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor , with whom he had a daughter. After their separation, he married former model and businesswoman Priya Sachdev , with whom he formed a family of two children.
Hours before the incident, Kapur had posted a message of condolence for the plane crash in Ahmedabad , which killed more than 240 people : “My thoughts are with all the affected families. May they find strength in this difficult time ,” he wrote.
To date, the British Royal Family has not issued any official statement , although it is known that the relationship between Prince William and Kapur has been ongoing for years, strengthened by their mutual passion for polo and meetings at exclusive events in the United Kingdom.
