I was cleaning the pool this morning when I suddenly noticed this.

I was alone by the pool when I saw it move—and my blood ran cold.
At first, it looked like trash. Then it twisted.
Long tail, swollen body, drifting like it owned the water.
I thought: parasite? Alien? Something deadly?
I searched for an hour, heart pounding, until the truth fi… Continues…

By the time I finally identified it, I had convinced myself it was something dangerous. Every strange photo online made my imagination worse—parasites, invasive species, horror stories from other people’s pools. Nothing matched exactly, which somehow made it even more unnerving. It just lay there in the net, that long tail trailing behind, as if it was still trying to breathe.

When I discovered it was a rat-tailed maggot—the larva of a harmless hoverfly—everything suddenly clicked. That “tail” was just a breathing tube, letting it survive in murky or standing water. Not a monster, not a threat, just an odd little piece of nature doing exactly what it was designed to do. I rinsed it out of the pool, feeling a little foolish, but also strangely relieved. Sometimes the scariest things become ordinary the moment you finally name them.
