8 Warning Signs of Stroke That May Appear One Month Before and 9 Ways to Help Reduce Your Risk

Stroke is often described as a sudden emergency, and its best-known warning signs do appear abruptly. In some cases, however, a person may experience a transient ischemic attack, or TIA, before a larger stroke. A TIA causes stroke-like symptoms that may disappear within minutes or hours, but the improvement does not make the episode harmless. It can be a serious warning that demands immediate medical attention.

One of the clearest signs is sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body. An arm may become difficult to lift, one side of the face may droop, or a leg may suddenly feel unstable. Asking the person to smile and raise both arms can help reveal an obvious difference, but emergency help should not be delayed for a home test.

Speech changes are another major warning. Words may become slurred, confused or impossible to produce. A person may also have trouble understanding a simple sentence even though they appear awake. Sudden confusion can be mistakenly attributed to tiredness or stress, particularly if it passes quickly.

Vision may change without warning. A person can experience blurred sight, double vision or a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes. Balance and coordination can also be affected, leading to dizziness, stumbling or an inability to walk normally.

A sudden severe headache with no known cause is another recognized symptom. It may feel different from an ordinary headache and can be accompanied by nausea, confusion, weakness or altered consciousness. New tingling, unusual sensation or pain occurring with other neurological changes should also be taken seriously.

Fatigue by itself has many common causes and is not a reliable predictor of stroke. The same is true of a mild headache or brief dizziness in isolation. What raises concern is a sudden neurological change, especially when symptoms affect one side, speech, sight, balance or awareness. Even if the signs vanish, a TIA requires urgent assessment because the underlying blood-flow problem has not necessarily been resolved.

The American Stroke Association uses the reminder B E F A S T. B stands for balance loss. E means eye or vision changes. F is face drooping. A is arm weakness. S is speech difficulty. T means it is time to call emergency services. Recording when symptoms first appeared can help medical teams make treatment decisions.

Reducing long-term risk begins with cardiovascular health. High blood pressure is a major controllable risk factor, so regular checks and prescribed treatment matter. Managing cholesterol, diabetes and atrial fibrillation can also reduce risk. Avoiding tobacco, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol and following a balanced diet all contribute to prevention.

People who have already experienced a stroke or TIA should follow the plan created with their clinicians and take prescribed medication consistently. Stopping treatment because symptoms have disappeared can leave the underlying risk unaddressed.

No list can predict exactly when a stroke will occur, and there is no dependable set of symptoms that always appears one month earlier. The useful warning is the TIA or any sudden stroke-like change, however brief. Recognizing it and acting immediately may prevent disability, reduce brain injury or save a life. When the signs appear, waiting to see whether they pass is the dangerous choice.
