The Promise He Kept From Me The Letter About Daniel and Organ Donation

My husband became an organ donor as his final wish — after he d*ed, his doctor stopped me and said, “There’s something

he made me promise to give you only after he was gone.”

Mark and I had been married for three years when I finally became pregnant with the baby we had always wanted.

Our happiness lasted only six months.

Then Mark learned about his illness.

The doctors gave him no more than three months to live.

He probably wouldn’t live long enough to meet our daughter.

That evening, he settled beside me on our porch with one hand resting on my belly.

“If my organs are still healthy enough when the time comes, I want them donated.”

“Please don’t talk about dying while she’s kicking,” I whispered.

“That’s exactly why I have to.”

He looked at my stomach.

“If I can’t watch her grow up, maybe I can at least make sure somebody else gets more time with theirs.”

Mark grew weaker much faster than we expected.

By my eighth month, I was helping him button his shirts and pretending not to notice when he had to stop halfway to the bathroom just to catch his breath.

A few weeks before he d*ed, Mark began asking to speak to his doctor alone.

I never understood why.

Whenever I asked what they discussed, he would only squeeze my hand and say,

“There’s something I need to arrange.

Please trust me.”

It was unlike him to keep anything from me, especially then.

But he was strangely firm about it.

So I let him do it.

He passed in the hospital with my hand wrapped around his.

Afterward, I signed the final donation papers with tears dripping onto the page.

I remembered that Mark wanted this.

I had to honor his final wish, even though doing so caused me unbearable pain.

As I was leaving the hospital, his doctor hurried after me, his face pale.

He was holding something behind his back so I couldn’t see it.

“Wait!

Please, wait!”

Something in his voice made me stop.

“Mark gave me this three weeks ago,” he said.

“He was very specific.

You weren’t supposed to see it while he was alive.”

The doctor held out a small envelope.

My name was written on it in Mark’s handwriting.

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold it.“He made me promise,” the doctor said quietly.

“He was very specific about the timing.”

I tore it open right there in the hallway.

Inside was a single folded letter — and underneath it, a photograph I had never seen before.

A woman.

A little boy.

Maybe four or five years old.

On the back of the photo, in Mark’s handwriting: *Take care of them.

Please.*

The floor felt like it was moving.

“Who are they?” I whispered.

The doctor looked down at his shoes.

“He asked me not to say anything beyond giving you the envelope.”

“Who are they?” My voice came out louder than I meant it to.

He swallowed hard.

“There’s a letter.

He wanted you to read it first.

Before anyone explains anything.”

I looked back at the photo.

The little boy had Mark’s eyes.

The same shape.

The same color.

My hand moved to my stomach without thinking.

Our daughter kicked once, hard.

I unfolded the letter.

The first line stopped me completely.

*By the time you read this, you’ll have already given someone a part of me.

I need you to know there’s something else I left behind — something I should have told you long before now.*

I read the first line three times before my eyes would move to the next one.

The hallway was empty except for the doctor, who had stepped back to give me space.

A cart rolled past somewhere around the corner.

A phone rang at the nurses’ station and was answered before the second ring.

Everything around me was continuing normally, and I was standing completely still.

I made myself read.

*By the time you read this, you’ll have already given someone a part of me.

I need you to know there’s something else I left behind — something I should have told you long before now.*

*Her name is Diane.

We were together for two years before I met you.

We ended things the right way — or I thought we did.

Eight months after we separated, she called to tell me she was pregnant.

She said the baby was mine.*

*I didn’t handle it well.

I was scared.

I told myself she had moved on, that she had people around her, that maybe I was wrong about the timing.

I told myself a lot of things that weren’t true.

What I actually did was nothing.I stayed away.

I let myself believe it was easier for everyone.*

*His name is Daniel.

He is five years old.

I have never met him.*

*I found out six weeks ago that Diane is sick.

Not the way I am sick — she may recover.

But she has no family nearby, and Daniel has no one else.

I have been trying to figure out how to tell you.

I kept starting and stopping.

I was ashamed.

I am ashamed.*

*I am not asking you to raise him.

I am not asking you to forgive me right away.

I am asking you to make sure he is not alone.

Whatever that looks like.

Whatever you can manage.

I know this is not fair.*
