Two tiny letters hide a powerful wartime story most candy lovers never hear. Before M&M’s became a colorful fixture in theaters and kitchen cupboards, two men joined forces to create chocolate that could travel farther without becoming a sticky mess. Their partnership helped put candy into American soldiers’ hands, but the names behind it reveal an unexpected business part…

M&M’s take their name from Forrest Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, whose collaboration brought the candy to market in 1941. Their arrangement connected Mars’s ambitions with access to Hershey’s chocolate through Murrie. The innovation was practical: a hard sugar shell helped protect the chocolate inside from melting. During World War II, that durability made the sweets particularly useful for American military personnel, offering a portable treat under conditions far removed from the comforts of home.

The business relationship eventually ended, with Mars gaining control, but both surnames remained embedded in the brand. Over the decades, M&M’s expanded through changing color assortments, peanut and peanut butter varieties, seasonal packaging, and memorable advertising. What began as a practical confection became part of movie nights, celebrations, baking, and everyday snacking around the world. Beneath all those colors, the familiar initials still preserve the partnership behind one of the world’s most recognizable candy brands.
