Learjet pilot reported two problems before aircraft crash that killed 9

Nine people were killed after a private jet plunged into a South Florida neighborhood. High above the ground, the crew reported two troubling conditions before a search for smoother air became a desperate emergency. As controllers listened, the pilot’s calls grew more urgent, ending with a devastating warning that now hangs over the investigation into the flight’s final mom…

The Bahamas-bound Learjet departed Austin, Texas, before crashing near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County at 12:50 p.m. on November 1. According to reported air traffic control recordings, the aircraft encountered icing and moderate turbulence at approximately 35,000 feet. The crew requested a climb after entering precipitation, but the jet subsequently entered a steep descent. After declaring an emergency and reporting an overspeed condition, the pilot transmitted: “We’re going to crash into the ground.” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed nine fatalities.

Governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths on the ground. Authorities evacuated approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile home community, with officials working to provide shelter and food. Emergency crews responded near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North as roads closed around the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, supported by the Federal Aviation Administration; the cause remains undetermined.
