Home The 5-month-old baby who was hit by a bullet has just died…

This week, a 16-month-old baby in Cleveland, Ohio, died after allegedly being left alone for over a week by her own mother, who went on vacation to Michigan.

The tragedy has shocked the entire community.

Authorities discovered young Janiya Thompson’s lifeless body on Monday afternoon in a small apartment on the east side of the city.

The infant was in appalling condition, alone, and unattended.

The initial police report states that the mother, Kristen Jones, age 21, locked her daughter in the apartment on March 18 so she could go on vacation with her partner.

She returned nine days later.

The investigation found that the young mother called 911 after discovering her daughter dead at the house.

But since Janiya had been dead for a few days, emergency personnel were powerless to help. Paramedics called the scene “heartbreaking and extremely negligent.”

Jones was taken into custody that same day and is accused of abandonment, aggravated child neglect, and involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors asked that she be detained without bail during her first court appearance, pointing to the gravity of the case and the possibility of her escape.

Although they were unaware of what was actually going on inside, the building’s neighbors claimed they hadn’t seen any activity in the apartment for a few days. Like many times before, we believed the mother had gone with the child. One neighbor, clearly shaken, remarked, “We never imagined she had left her alone.”

There has been a great deal of outrage, particularly on social media, where thousands of people have voiced their suffering, rage, and confusion over what many believe to be an avoidable circumstance.

One Twitter user asked, “How can a mother put a vacation before her daughter’s life?” and the name of little Janiya went viral. Childhood and family protection experts have stressed the value of bolstering support systems for young, unmarried mothers and promoting reporting of suspected neglect.

According to social worker María Elena Vargas, “if those closest to them act responsibly and report them promptly, these types of tragedies can often be prevented.”

According to people familiar with the case, the mother had a history of minor neglect that never reached the court system, so Child Protective Services has started a background investigation on her.

This weekend is the little girl’s funeral, and to help with the expenses, a number of community organizations are soliciting donations.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the community is waiting for justice for a baby whose life was
