Dania Lucía Cuevas Ponce

Dely Barahona, a 48-year-old man, took the life of Dania Lucía Cuevas Ponce, a 14-year-old girl who was shot after refusing to have a relationship with him.

The incident occurred in Cedros, Francisco Morazán. Here are the details of the case.

On the morning of Wednesday, June 18, in the village of Las Ánimas, municipality of Cedros, Francisco Morazán, authorities arrested Dely Barahona, accused and detained of killing 14-year-old Dania Lucía Cuevas Ponce.

According to the preliminary report provided by police authorities, the minor refused to be his girlfriend, so the suspect attempted to force her to live with him. When she resisted, the man pulled out a firearm and shot her.

After committing the attack, the individual fled in an unknown direction, but fortunately, he was arrested moments later, while the minor was assisted by family members and taken to a medical center.

Unfortunately, despite the swift action of her family, Dania died on Saturday afternoon, June 21, according to her family.

According to investigations conducted by the investigating officers, the suspect had been harassing the minor for some time, but although her family knew about it, they did not report it to avoid problems and for fear of the threats they received.

At the time of his arrest, a revolver-type firearm was seized from the man, which is believed to be the weapon used in the murder.

Barahona, who is originally from and lives in the same area where he was arrested by police authorities, is charged with attempted femicide and illegal possession of a firearm. He will now be charged with the death of the minor.

Family, friends, and acquaintances have mourned the death of the minor and are calling for justice for her murder.

“We just have to pray for strength. Her life was taken from her; she was just a child (…). The pain and helplessness one feels in these situations is inexplicable.” “Rest in peace, little one. Justice for my cousin,” “My little girl, rest in peace; we miss you,” and “My little black girl, you’ve left us” are some of the messages shared by loved ones.
