Gasps echoed. Donna’s face paled as Dad added,

“If you think she lives off you, maybe ask why you had to humiliate her in front of everyone just to feel important.

And while you’re at it, ask yourself what kind of mother raises a man who still needs a mommy instead of a wife.”

The crowd burst into applause.

Donna shrank into her seat.

My dad raised his glass high: “To my daughter, who owes no one here a damn thing.”

Later, Jason whispered, “I’m so sorry.

I’ll never let anyone disrespect you again — not even my mother.”

And for the first time that day, I believed him.
