Pope Francis, aged 88, passed away on Easter Monday,

21 April, due to a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and heart failure.

Following nine days of mourning and

the traditional sede vacante period, the College of Cardinals convened in the

Sistine Chapel for the papal conclave.

After several rounds of voting, white smoke confirmed the selection of a new pope,

though his identity has only recently been confirmed by the Vatican.

In his final will, released on 22 April,

Pope Francis requested a simple burial in the ground at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major,

near the Pauline and Sforza Chapels.

His tomb is to bear only the inscription “Franciscus.”

His final wishes reflect his humility and lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary.

He offered his final suffering for global peace and unity.
