In a surprising turn, the FBI has reopened its investigation into one of the most bizarre mysteries of the Biden-era White House: the bag of cocaine discovered inside the West Wing in July 2023.
On May 26th, Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the agency is reexamining several high-profile cases, including the infamous cocaine incident, the unsolved 2021 D.C. pipe bombing, and the Supreme Court Dobbs decision leak.
”Shortly after swearing in, the Director and I evaluated a number of cases of potential public corruption that, understandably, have garnered public interest,” Bongino posted. “We made the decision to either re-open, or push additional resources and investigative attention, to these cases… I receive requested briefings on these cases weekly and we are making progress.”
The scandal shocked the nation
On July 2, 2023, Secret Service agents discovered a small bag of cocaine in a cubby near the West Wing’s entrance — an area frequented by staff, visitors, and VIP guests.
The shocking discovery led to an immediate evacuation of the White House as the Secret Service launched a full investigation. At the time, President Joe Biden and his family were not in Washington — they were staying at Camp David in Maryland.
The FBI confirmed the substance was cocaine, but the bag lacked usable fingerprints or DNA, leaving investigators with little to go on.
No suspect was ever identified and the Secret Service was unable to narrow down the list of possible suspects, which included over 500 staff members and visitors who might have left the cocaine behind.
“That was such a terrible thing,” former President Donald Trump said in a recent interview, “because, you know, those bins are very loaded up with … they’re not clean, and they have hundreds and even thousands of fingerprints.”
He added, “When they went to look at it, it was absolutely stone cold, wiped dry. You know that, right?”
Trump’s bold claim
During the same interview, Trump didn’t hold back when asked who he thought was responsible. “Well, either Joe or Hunter,” he told The Spectator’s Ben Domenech.
“Could be Joe, too.”
As mentioned, the Biden family — including the president and his son Hunter —were reportedly at Camp David, not the White House, when the drugs were found.
Still, speculation around Hunter Biden’s past has fueled the public’s curiosity.
In his 2021 memoir Beautiful Things, Hunter opened up about his intense crack cocaine addiction and his path to sobriety.
“I spent more time on my hands and knees picking through rugs smoking anything that even remotely resembled crack cocaine,” Hunter Biden told Tracy Smith of CBS Sunday Morning.
“I probably smoked more parmesan cheese than anyone that you know,” he joked.
According to court testimony, he has been clean since 2019.
