First People of the Los Angeles Basin, responded with a mix of grace and unmistakable challenge: yes,

they appreciated her visibility for Indigenous history – but they also reminded the world that her Southern California home stands on their ancestral territory, and that she has never contacted them directly.

Their statement cut through the political noise that followed, from Ron DeSantis’ mockery to calls for celebrities to “give back their land.”

The Tongva didn’t demand her mansion. Instead, they asked for something harder to ignore: explicit recognition, real relationships, and a future where their name is spoken as easily as any pop star’s.
