Powerful 8.8‑Magnitude Quake Near Russia Triggers Tsunami Warning As Waves Hit Hawaii

On Wednesday, a strong magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia caused tsunami waves up to 5 meters (16 feet) in height in the immediate area and prompted evacuation orders as far away as Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.

While majority of Japan’s eastern seaboard, which was devastated by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in 2011, was urged to evacuate, the shallow earthquake in the isolated Russian region damaged structures and injured a number of people.

According to a Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky resident, the shaking continued for a few minutes.

“I decided to leave the building,” said Yaroslav, 25. “It felt like the walls could collapse any moment. The shaking lasted continuously for at least 3 minutes.”

In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a group of medical professionals were performing surgery while the tremors rocked their tools and the floor below them, according to video footage made public by the region’s health ministry.

Parts of Kamchatka were hit by tsunami waves, which swept boats off their moorings and partially flooded the port and a fish processing facility in the town of Severo-Kurilsk, according to regional officials and Russia’s emergency ministry.

The town’s entire shoreline was underwater, according to verified drone footage, and water was visible gushing back into the sea around taller buildings and some storage facilities.

“Today’s earthquake was serious and the strongest in decades of tremors,” Governor Vladimir Solodov of Kamchatka stated in a video that was shared on the Telegram application. According to Russian geologists, it was the strongest to strike the area since 1952.

Before the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre lowered its warning level for the state at approximately 0850 GMT, stating that no significant tsunami was anticipated, waves as high as 1.7 meters (5.5 feet) struck the Hawaiian islands.

Previously, the U.S. Coast Guard ordered ships out of harbours and advised coastal people to evacuate to high ground or the fourth story or higher of buildings.

According to the transportation agency, flights from Honolulu airport resumed later, but Maui’s main airport remained closed, and travellers took refuge in the terminal.

As far as California, tsunami waves of about half a metre were recorded; lesser ones even made it to British Columbia, Canada.

WARNINGS ACROSS THE PACIFIC
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles), and it was located 119 km (74 miles) east-southeast of the 165,000-person city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate as tsunami warnings went off in coastal communities along Japan’s Pacific coast.

According to operator TEPCO, workers left the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant, where a meltdown after the 2011 tsunami resulted in a toxic catastrophe.

As fishing boats departed harbours to prevent any damage from approaching waves, footage from public broadcaster NHK showed dozens of people on the roof of a building on the northern island of Hokkaido, seeking shade from the sun beneath tents.

In the Mie prefecture of central Japan, a 58-year-old lady was evacuating when her car plunged off a cliff, according to broadcaster Asahi TV.

According to the Kyodo news agency, automaker Nissan Motor (7201.T) has paused operations at a few Japanese factories in order to protect worker safety.

According to officials, three tsunami waves, the greatest of which measured 1.3 meters (4.3 feet), have been reported in Japan.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, the chief cabinet secretary, stated that no nuclear reactors had any anomalies and that no damage or injuries had been detected.

According to NHK, individuals who are swept away by tsunami waves of one to three meters (3 to 9 feet) may not survive.

According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, waves of one to three meters could occur in Japan, Hawaii, Chile, and the Solomon Islands, while waves of more than three meters could occur along the shores of Ecuador, the northern Hawaiian islands, and some parts of Russia.

‘RING OF FIRE’
On Telegram, Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Services said that while most structures survived the earthquake, a kindergarten sustained damage. There have been no recorded fatalities or major injuries.

Following the earthquake, a number of Kamchatka residents sought medical attention, regional health minister Oleg Melnikov said Russia’s TASS state news agency.

According to Russia’s RIA news agency, tsunami waves in Severo-Kurilsk, in the northern Kuril islands, south of Kamchatka, topped three meters, with the highest reaching five meters.

The town’s mayor, Alexander Ovsyannikov, advised citizens to evaluate the damage to their houses and refrain from using gas cooker heating until inspections were completed.

Russia’s Far East and Kamchatka are located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active area that frequently experiences volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

“However, due to certain characteristics of the epicentre, the shaking intensity was not as high … as one might expect from such a magnitude,” said Danila Chebrov, director of the Kamchatka Branch of the Geophysical Service, on Telegram.

“Aftershocks are currently ongoing … Their intensity will remain fairly high. However, stronger tremors are not expected in the near future. The situation is under control.”
