Touching reason why Pope Francis’ coffin will be lined with zinc

Following the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 on Easter Monday (21 April),

the Vatican has officially announced details of his funeral and burial plans.

His passing was attributed to a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and ultimately, irreversible heart failure.

The funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday (26 April),

with dignitaries and world leaders from around the globe expected to attend and honor his legacy.

Known for his humility and simple lifestyle,

Pope Francis made one final request that reflects those values —

a wooden coffin lined with zinc, rather than the traditional combination of cypress, lead, and oak.

This unique choice has sparked attention not only for its cost-effectiveness but also for its symbolic and practical meaning…

According to experts, zinc linings help protect the body

from external elements such as water and insects, preserving the memory of the departed in a dignified manner. T

his sentiment echoes throughout the Pope’s final testament,

signed on 29 June 2022, in which he humbly requested to be laid to rest in a simple tomb at the

Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, beneath the ground with only the inscription

“Franciscus.” Inspired by his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary,

he asked that his final resting place be located between the

Pauline and Sforza Chapels—places he often visited to pray at the start and end of every apostolic journey.

He offered the pain of his final days for global peace and unity,

leaving behind a legacy of compassion, simplicity, and spiritual dedication.
