Usha Vance opens up about motherhood, life as Second Lady — And that First Lady question

Usha Vance isn’t chasing the spotlight, but it’s definitely found her.

The lawyer, mom of three, and now Second Lady of the United States is adjusting to public life in her own way. And in a rare, candid interview with Meghan McCain on the Citizen McCain podcast, Usha gave listeners a glimpse into family life, political transitions, and whether she’s thinking about becoming First Lady someday.

“Three years ago, or maybe it’s four years ago at this point, I had absolutely no intention of leading any sort of life in politics,” Usha admitted. “It really is that rapid.”

“Along for the Ride” — No Big Plans Beyond 2029

While some are already speculating about her husband, Vice President JD Vance, as a potential future presidential candidate, Usha says she isn’t looking that far ahead.

“People do ask about it,” she said when McCain raised the First Lady question. “My attitude is that this is a four-year period where I have a set of responsibilities to my family, to myself, to obviously, the country. And that’s really what I’m focused on.”

The Vances share three children:

  • Ewan Blaine
  • Vivek
  • Mirabel Rose

“In a dream world, eventually, I’ll be able to live in my home and kind of continue my career and all those sorts of things,” Usha added. “I’m just sort of along for the ride and enjoying it while I can.”

Before moving to Washington, Usha worked as an attorney at Munger, Tolles & Olson but stepped away from the firm after JD’s nomination.

Meghan McCain Shares Surprise Baby News

During the podcast, McCain surprised both Usha and listeners by announcing she’s expecting her third child.

“I am just entering my second trimester,” McCain said. “I’m pregnant with my third.”

Usha offered reassurance as a fellow mom of three:

“I love having three kids,” she said. “It’s just enough for them all to be kind of a pack… The oldest will take care of the youngest one. The youngest is so motivated to be like the older two that basically she’s self-sufficient and always has been.”

Staying Focused on Faith, Family, and the Present

For now, Usha Vance says her focus is simple:
Family first. Faith. And supporting her husband.

No big political ambitions. No plotted-out next steps.

“I’m just along for the ride.”
