I never thought I’d be a single mom. When Daniel and I got married, I pictured a life filled with love and stability for our future children. But just weeks after our son Jeremy was born, Daniel vanished.

One morning, his side of the closet was empty, his toothbrush gone, his phone off. It wasn’t long before I discovered he had left the country to start a new life with another woman. When Jeremy took to him quickly, I thought I’d finally found someone who would love us both. We married a year later, and for a while, things felt safe again.

But my mother noticed something first. “Watch how Jeremy acts around Sam,” she warned. “He changes.” I brushed it off. But then I began to see it too. Jeremy would brighten around me, but as soon as Sam walked in, he’d go quiet, shrink into himself, sometimes even cry without reason.

I asked Sam if he noticed, and he chalked it up to the adjustment of having a new father figure. It sounded reasonable, but something still didn’t sit right.

One day, while sharing ice cream with Jeremy, I gently asked why he seemed upset around Sam. His answer chilled me: “I heard Daddy on the phone… he said I’m a problem.” My heart broke. I asked if he was sure, and he nodded, whispering, “Is he going to leave like my first daddy?”

That night, I confronted Sam. He claimed he was talking about a coworker named Jeremy, not my son. He even sat down with Jeremy the next morning to explain, and my son seemed reassured. But my mother wasn’t convinced.

“Have you ever met anyone Sam works with?” she asked. I hadn’t. That’s when she made a call to someone who worked at the company Sam claimed to be with. They’d never heard of him.

Terrified, I lied to Sam and said I was taking Jeremy to visit my mother. Once there, I hired a private investigator. Days later, I got the report—and it was worse than I imagined. Sam had no real job. The address he gave me was fake.

His phone call that night? It was with his mother, and they were conspiring together.

Their plan was to frame me for financial fraud using access to accounts from my job, take my savings and home, and leave me to face the consequences. Jeremy was “a problem” because if I were jailed, Sam would be left to care for him—or dump him into state custody.
