Bloated Food Packaging: What It Really Means

Not every inflated bag means trouble. Chips often contain nitrogen to protect their crunch, and some refrigerated products use protective gas mixtures to extend freshness.

The concern is unexpected swelling, particularly in packages that have changed shape during storage.

Microbial activity can generate gas inside foods, making a swollen container a possible sign of spoilage.

Bulging cans deserve particular caution: some canned foods can harbor dangerous toxins, and appearance or smell cannot reliably establish safety.

At the store, avoid unexpectedly swollen refrigerated packages and cans that bulge, leak, show heavy rust, or have deep dents near their seams.

At home, keep perishables refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below and follow storage instructions.

Dates offer guidance, not a safety guarantee. Never taste questionable food to test it, and do not open a bulging can.

Follow local disposal guidance for suspect canned goods. Losing a meal is better than risking your health.
