That account does not establish a confirmed diagnosis of brain death, which is irreversible. Her lawyers reported that Pike could speak briefly but had pneumonia, a blood clot, difficulty swallowing, and severely swollen arms and hands.
For the family, relief has come with unanswered questions. Ross said relatives had not spoken directly with Pike,
while her attorneys warned that recovery could be lengthy and the extent of lasting injuries remained unknown.
They also said Tennessee had offered no assurance against another execution attempt.
According to the report, a court ordered evidence preserved, including drugs, intravenous equipment,
and surveillance footage—materials that could become central to determining what happened and what follows.
