My Daughter Wanted $800 a Month and Four Days of Babysitting for Her Basement So I Rented My Own Little House for $550

Judy needed to leave the farmhouse where she and her late husband, Dale, had spent decades.

His former employers had generously let her stay after his death, but their son’s growing family now needed it.

Her daughter’s proposal included rent, utilities, groceries—and babysitting four days a week.

On a monthly widow’s benefit of $1,640, Judy couldn’t ignore either the financial strain or the feeling that she would have to work to justify her welcome.

Rather than argue, she visited the feed store and asked about a rental notice. Mr. Brandt showed her a tiny house with a porch swing, a bright kitchen window, and just one step to the entrance. Rent was $550, with electricity and gas extra. Judy wrote the check.

At sixty-seven, she finally held keys to a home she had chosen herself.

She looked away to hide her tears; those two brass keys meant more than shelter.
