Danny had survived devastating injuries, but shame convinced him I deserved someone else.
His mother encouraged the deception and destroyed a letter revealing his survival. “You took away my choice,” I told him.
Yet our separate lives had held genuine happiness: he had loved Elaine and raised a daughter; I had built a family with Ted. During Sunday visits, anger slowly gave way to understanding. Neither of us wanted to erase those marriages or pretend we could recover our youth.
With his daughter’s help, we visited the empty grave bearing his name and began correcting the lie.
Later, beside the Reno river where he had proposed, I offered forgiveness. Danny died the following June with us beside him.
His new headstone read, “He came home.” Afterward, I returned to my family and garden,
grateful we had finally told the truth—and determined to keep enjoying the life I still had.
