Those scattered black dots and inky splashes are often nothing more sinister than spider droppings, but understanding them can change how you see your home. Unlike the dry pellets from many pests, spider feces usually look like tiny paint splatters, ranging from black or dark brown to gray or even whitish. You’ll most often find them beneath webs, along ceilings, around window frames, behind furniture, and in quiet corners where spiders sit undisturbed for weeks.

While these stains are usually more of a cosmetic issue than a health threat, it’s still wise to clean them carefully. Use gloves or paper towels, wipe fresh spots with warm water and mild cleaner, and scrub older discoloration more firmly. If new marks keep appearing, focus on prevention: vacuum webs and egg sacs, reduce clutter, seal gaps around doors and windows, and limit outdoor lights that draw insects. When stains and spiders multiply despite your efforts, a licensed pest professional can inspect, identify the source, and suggest targeted treatments so your home feels clean, calm, and truly yours again.
