These rare formations occur in mid‑level cloud layers filled with supercooled water droplets—liquid water hanging in the air even though the temperature is below freezing. All it takes is a small trigger to flip that delicate balance.
When an aircraft slices through that cloud deck, the sudden drop in pressure and temperature around its wings or propellers can force those droplets to freeze into ice crystals.
