Sarah and Michael had been married for three years when they learned that the child they had long wanted was finally on the way. Six months into the pregnancy, however, their happiness was interrupted by devastating news. Michael was seriously ill, and doctors believed he might have only three months left. He might never meet their daughter.

One evening, the couple sat together on their porch with Michael’s hand resting on Sarah’s belly. He told her that if his organs remained healthy enough, he wanted to become a donor. The letter did not remove Sarah’s grief. It revealed why Michael had needed private conversations with his doctor. He was not hiding a betrayal or shutting her out. He was trying to prepare a message that would reach two families after he could no longer speak for himself.

Months later, Sarah received a letter from the transplant recipient’s family. A man who had been running out of time now had a chance to return home to his wife and children. They expressed gratitude without pretending that their joy could erase her loss.
