Through a Child’s Eyes: The Beauty of Simple Moments

I teach 2-year-olds, and every day brings a new surprise. One morning, during circle time,

I decided to learn more about my students’ families. I asked one little boy, “What’s your mommy’s name?”

Without hesitation, he replied, “Michelle.” Smiling, I continued, “And what’s your daddy’s name?”

He frowned slightly, deep in thought, clearly unsure of the answer.

Hoping to help him remember, I asked, “Well, what does Mommy call Daddy?”

He paused for a moment, eyes looking toward the ceiling as if replaying the scenes from his home.

Then, with the sweetest innocence, he proudly said,

“She calls him ‘Babe, take out the trash!’”

The entire class burst into laughter, and even I couldn’t help but smile. In that moment,

the pure honesty of a child turned an ordinary question into a lesson in love and humor.

Later, as I thought about it, I realized how much children absorb from the world around them.

They may not always remember our names or titles, but they remember the tone of our voices,

the kindness in our actions, and the laughter in our homes.

To this little boy,

his parents’ love wasn’t about names — it was about shared moments,

everyday chores, and the comfort of hearing familiar words said with affection.

That day reminded me that children see life through a lens of truth and simplicity.

They notice love not in grand gestures, but in small daily acts — the way we speak to each other,

how we help, and how we care. Sometimes, the purest wisdom comes from the smallest voices.

And perhaps that’s the most beautiful thing about teaching — the children teach us just as much as we teach them.
