Volunteers arrived with dry socks, thermoses of coffee, and quiet words that steadied shaking shoulders.
No one could stop the storm, but they could stand between it and the most vulnerable.
By dawn, the damage was undeniable—roofs gone, cars drowned, lives upended—but so was something else:
