Presented in two volumes, Nymphomaniac follows Joe as she recounts her history from youth to age fifty.
Stacy Martin portrays her younger self, while Charlotte Gainsbourg takes on the older Joe, giving the narrative two faces across its long span.
The framing encounter begins after Joe is discovered hurt, placing vulnerability at the center of a film marketed as a poetic chronicle of one woman’s intimate life.
Stellan Skarsgård plays the solitary man who listens, responding with intellectual detours that shape the telling.
This is not simply a chronological account: Joe’s recollections unfold within a conversation, bringing personal experience into contact with another person’s interpretations.
Released in 2013, Lars von Trier’s film attracted immediate controversy.
Yet its central dramatic situation remains strikingly intimate: a woman describing the life she has lived, and a listener attempting to engage with a story that is not his own.
