As usual, we opened our camper after a long winter in storage. We expected to find a bit of dust, maybe some spider webs.

But in one corner, we found something strange – a dark mush, like soot or spilled powder. Everything was covered in black dust – the mats, the corners, everything.

At first, we thought it was just mold or something harmless, like burned debris. We planned to just clean it up and move on.

But curiosity got the better of us. What was this strange substance? We took a few pictures, started googling, and even sent the images to a vet we know. And that’s when things got scary.

It turned out it wasn’t dust or mold. It was raccoon feces. Yes, really – what we first thought was harmless dirt turned out to be extremely dangerous.

Raccoon droppings can contain the eggs of a parasite called Baylisascaris procyonis – a roundworm that lives in raccoons.

It’s mostly harmless to the animals themselves, but it can be deadly to humans. The infection can damage the brain, eyes, and other organs. It poses a serious risk to children and people with weakened immune systems.

After we found out, we immediately contacted a doctor and had the camper professionally disinfected. Even inhaling the spores or getting the dust on your hands can be dangerous.

Now we know for sure: when opening a camper or shed that’s been closed for a long time – be cautious and check every corner thoroughly.
