In the dim hospital light, Robert reached for Daniel’s hand, his voice shaking more from emotion than illness.
He spoke of a young man Margaret had loved before him, a man who had wanted desperately to be a father but died in an accident weeks before Daniel was born.
Robert had married Margaret knowing she was pregnant, promising that the child would never feel the absence of the man they’d lost.
There had never been a DNA test, only a quiet agreement to raise Daniel as their own.
The transplant went ahead. The surgery was grueling, but both survived. In the weeks that followed, Daniel’s scar ached less than the question burning in his chest.
If biology didn’t bind them, what did? He watched Robert learning to walk the ward again, cracking tired jokes, asking about the grandchildren.
And slowly, painfully, the answer came. A father, Daniel realized, isn’t the man whose blood you carry.
It’s the man who shows up, again and again, until love becomes the only truth that matters.
